A Hardware Design Specification defines the physical parts  of the system including:

Operator Interface devices

The controllers

The Input and Output cards,  including

• Digital Inputs

• Digital Outputs

• Analogue Inputs

• Analogue Outputs

• Pulse Counters

For each instrument or group of instruments the following elements should be considered:

• Accuracy

• Isolation

• Range of current and voltage

• Type and numbers of interface cards

• Timing

The HDS shall describe the operating environment for the hardware. The following topics

should be considered:

• Temperature

• Humidity

• External Interference

• Physical security

• Radio-frequency, electro-magnetic and UV-interference

Note that the hardware is not strongly linked with the software development
