The term Life Cycle comes from the IT industry and has been taken up by the Control Systems suppliers, however there way it is applied in automation is often quite different from that in other software. In general automation is not about inventing anything new, it is generally more a matter of adapting pre-established system designs to a new plant.
Specifications and Testing are linked so you should write your specification thinking about how you know that it has been attained.
